The Issue: Duplicate Payment Due to Server Downtime

On July 21, 2025, while attempting to make a ₹1500 payment at Sagar Petroleum (Bharat Petroleum) using an HDFC Bank account, the transaction showed a “pending” status due to ongoing server maintenance.

Believing the transaction had failed, the customer tried again. However, both transactions were later processed resulting in a double debit of ₹1500, totaling ₹3000.

This error remained unnoticed until a later review of the bank statement, as no alert or notification was provided about the pending transaction being completed.

Customer’s Expectations

The complainant has formally requested HDFC Bank to:

  • Review and reverse the duplicate transaction
  • Provide clarity on how to initiate a formal dispute or refund request
  • Improve communication during server downtimes and pending transactions

The incident caused not just financial inconvenience, but also emotional distress due to a lack of transparency and proactive alerts from the bank.

About HDFC Bank

HDFC Bank is one of India’s largest private sector banks, trusted by millions for personal and business banking. However, technical glitches, delayed alerts, and inconsistent support during server maintenance have resulted in a growing number of customer complaints.

Incidents like these not only impact financial confidence but also question the reliability of digital banking systems during downtimes.
